Mahogany Wood
Mahogany wood comes in several species, including African Mahogany and Santos Mahogany. African Mahogany wood is a select species that features a higher density than other Mahogany species. It is found in timber producing areas of Africa, including the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Gabon.
Santos Mahogany wood comes from Brazil and other South American locations, and is characterized by its rich, dark brown color. It is closer in hue to genuine Mahogany and will experience some color muting over time. Like African Mahogany, this wood is easily able to be polished and finished with a variety of products, varnishes, oils, and waxes.
Most species of Mahogany share similar characteristics. Theses include a high aptitude for stains and finishes, easy to cut, and somewhat resistant to bending by steam processes. They are all lighter in color when they are freshly cut, and darken to a shade of reddish-brown upon maturity. As well, they are all excellent choices for floors and cabinets.
Thanks to eco-friendly plantations and growth practices, this wood has been saved from extinction. High recent demand has caused some concern in the industry about the supply level, but sustainable farms insist that they can continue to stock suppliers with the level of wood needed.
