Rich in red and orange-brown coloring, this Central and South American wood is ideal for home and business use. Beautiful and strong, this wood is known for its long lasting durability. It is classified as either extinct or rare in Costa Rica, but is very prevalent throughout other countries like Mexico, Guatemala, and Argentina. The trees themselves are commonly 50 to 65 feet in height, although they can grow up to as much as 100 feet tall. They are skinnier than some of their hardwood counterparts, with diameters of about one and a half to three feet.

One interesting thing about Santos Mahogany is that the sapwood is white in color, while the heartwood is the darker choice you see used for floors, furniture, and cabinetry. It features an interlocked grain that, when quartersawn, shows a striped pattern that can be quite unique. The texture of this wood is typically very fine and uniform throughout.
