Aesthetically, the natural beauty of Ipe wood varies from olive to chocolate to a very
dark black-brown color, sometimes with a light or dark striping pattern. Ipe has little or
no knots. It has a medium luster with a slightly oily appearance and a fine texture.
Some people apply a sealer coat to preserve the natural color but if left in its natural
state, the color will turn a soft, silvery-gray patina. However, Ipe requires no sealers
other than for aesthetic reasons. It will not absorb water like softwoods, allowing it to
dry with little checking, twisting, shrinking, or bow. The density of the wood keeps it from
rotting over time makes Ipe decking virtually maintenance free.
Ipe decking is free from splinters, making it the perfect choice for deck flooring.
Considering the life cycle of an Ipe deck, it is a more economical choice for decking material.
Because Ipe wood resists rotting, decay and insects, there is less need for repair, replacement,
or maintenance. Over time, those costs can add up to a substantial amount.
Ipe saves money in the long run.
